Armed robber stabs policeman during operation in Ebonyi



A policeman simply identified as Harrison was on Tuesday stabbed by a suspected armed robber during a robbery operation in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state capital.

Men of the state Police command acting on a tip-off, laid ambush on the robbers who had burgled a phone shop, C-Net communications link Ltd, at about 7pm along Gunning Road in the state capital, during which they were engaged in a shooting spree.

In the process, the policeman was stabbed and two of the robbery suspects were shot. The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP George Okafor, confirmed the incident to newsmen on Wednesday. He said the robbery occurred around 7pm.

He said, “The Command received a distress call that the robbers were robbing the phone shop, and quickly dispatched its men to intercept the bandits.
“When our men arrived at the scene, there was a gun battle.

“One of the robbers engaged an officer identified as Harrison and stabbed him repeatedly in various parts of his body and even attempted to take his riffle.

“But our men were up to the task and responded and in the process the assailant and one of his colleagues were shot.

“The two injured robbers and the police officer were rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, FETHA11.

“One of the suspects died on the way while the policeman stabbed is responding to treatment,” the PPRO added.

Court sentences two to death for armed robbery

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Wednesday ordered the hanging of one Omoilodan Seun and Gbenga Kayode, who were convicted of armed robbery. Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, who pronounced the judgment, said the state proved its case against the convicts “beyond reasonable doubts.”

She convicted them on three counts of conspiracy, attempted armed robbery and armed robbery. The Lagos State Directorate of Prosecutions had in the charge filed against the convicts accused them of robbing one Alhaji Jinadu of phones and money on November 2, 2011 on Ayangburen Road, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.

The convicts were also said to have waylaid and robbed one Rilwan Gbadamosi and his wife on November 9, 2011 along the same Ayangburen Road in Ikorodu. The state prosecutor, Mr. Akin George, had told the court that the convicts violated Section 295(2)(b) of the Criminal law of Lagos State.

The convicts had upon their arraignment on three counts pleaded not guilty but the court found them guilty following evidence by the state. Upon their conviction on Wednesday, their lawyer, Damola Victor, pleaded for the court’s leniency in sentencing them, saying they were first-time offenders, with no previous records of conviction.

In her judgment, Justice Ipaye sentenced Seun and Kayode to life imprisonment on the count of attempted armed robbery but she sentenced them to death by hanging on the charges of conspiracy and armed robbery.

There was a robbery incident at Jumofak area of Ikorodu, Lagos this morning. According to eye-witnesses, a lady was on her way to work by 6am when a thief attacked her with a dagger, gave her a cut on her left arm and collected her phones. The lady's shouts for help attracted passerby who ran after the thief and he was caught. He was beaten up and handed over to the local security agents "Onyabo". More photos below...

Robbers raid Imo Airport, escape with N20m

Suspected armed robbers on Friday morning raided a micro finance bank located in the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, as well as the offices of Arik and Air Peace Airlines in Imo State. Over N20m and other valuables were said to have been carted away in the robbery that lasted just a few minutes.

According to an eye witness, the armed robbers who besieged the airport in two unmarked vehicles, overpowered the security men attached to the bank. The source who stated that the noise of banging of doors and windows by the robbers coupled with their gunshots scared people away from the scene.

An employee of Arik, who didn’t want to be named, said their offices were broken into, company and personal valuables of the workers were stolen.

He said, “We are still in shock how the robbers could have been able to operate freely without being challenged, with the number of security men at the Airport, calls for serious concern because if the Airport cannot be safe, where else can be.”

Meanwhile when contacted, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the incident, however, said it was a case of burglary. According to him, “We got the report that some hoodlums broke into a Micro Finance Bank at the airport, but we did not get any report that they removed cash and no one was killed or wounded.

“Already investigation is ongoing and the the two security men attached to the bank are currently being interrogated.”
