Messi returns as Barca seek Deportivo scalp

Messi returns as Barca seek Deportivo scalp

Argentina’s pain is Barcelona’s gain as Lionel Messi returns for the Spanish champions when Deportivo la Coruna visit the Camp Nou on Saturday after being sidelined for three weeks with a groin injury.

Messi missed Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Paraguay as La Albiceleste’s struggles without the five-time World Player of the Year continued, putting at risk their place at the 2018 World Cup.

However, international breaks have traditionally caused Barca trouble too with lethargic performances on their return to La Liga action coming to be known as the “FIFA virus.”

Barca boss Luis Enrique paid a heavy price for leaving Messi and Luis Suarez on the bench for a shock 2-1 home defeat to Alaves after September’s international break.

“It is a different game for us having had so few days with the team together to prepare,” Enrique said on Friday.

“It is not an excuse because it happens to all big teams, but it is something that conditions the game and when you have had the result like the Alaves one, it means you prepare the game with even more emphasis.”

With a blockbuster Champions League clash against former Barca coach Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to come on Wednesday, Enrique could be tempted to roll the dice with his selection once more.

However, with Barca trailing Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid by two points at the top following a 4-3 defeat to Celta Vigo last time out, Enrique insists Deportivo have to be Barca’s priority.

“We want to cut the gap and the only way to do that is to win our matches,” he added.

“The precedent is there and the players know how difficult and special it is to only have two days to prepare for a game. To think of any other match is an error.”

Messi is expected to be eased back into action as a second-half substitute. Meanwhile, Suarez could make way for Paco Alcacer having played twice for Uruguay in the past week.

Neymar will definitely start as he returned to the Catalan capital early due to his suspension for Brazil’s 2-0 win at Venezuela on Tuesday.

Aston Villa sign Adama Traore from Barcelona

Aston Villa sign Adama Traore from Barcelona

Adama Traore has completed his €10 million move to Aston Villa from Barcelona. The 19-year-old winger only made four senior appearances for the Nou Camp side and has now signed a five-year deal at Villa Park. Barcelona however reserve the right to back the player for a fixed price, at any point in the first three years of his contract and also retain first option for any future transfer from Villa.

“It’s an honour for me to come here,” Adama told Villa’s official website. “It’s a club that showed interest in me from the first moment and made me feel important in terms of their project. “I have spoken to the manager and have a very good impression of him and what he wants from me. All this have made this club my top attraction.

“I would also like to express my gratitude to everyone at FC Barcelona for helping me develop as a player and as a person.” Villa manager, Tim Sherwood, could not hide his delight at finally landing his man and took time to gush about his qualities.

“He’s someone I have been tracking for a long time,” Sherwood said. “He’s physically a man – and he has been for some time. He’s a big powerful boy, very quick, dynamic and a maverick-type player. Those players are few and far between.

“We’re delighted he has chosen Villa to continue his development.” Adama becomes the ninth senior signing to arrive at Villa, after Micah Richards, Idrissa Gueye, Scott Sinclair, Jordan Veretout, Jordan Ayew, Jordan Amavi, Jose Angel Crespo and Rudy Gestede.

Dani Alves renew contract with Barcelona

Dani Alves renew contract with Barcelona

After months of speculation, the Brazilian defender has finally put pen-to-paper on a two-year extension, along with the option for one more. Barcelona announced that Dani Alves signed a new contract with the club on Tuesday. The 32-year-old looked set to leave the club after talks stalled over a deal, with his agent revealing AC Milan and several clubs were interested in his services.

However, both parties have now come to an agreement, meaning he will remain at the club until at least the summer of 2017. "FC Barcelona announce that Dani Alves has accepted the club's proposal for the renewal of his contract," a statement on the Blaugrana's official website read. "The new agreement linking the two parties will run for two more seasons until 30 June 2017, plus an optional third season."

Alves played a key role in Luis Enrique's side securing a magnificent treble of the Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League titles last term. The Brazilian was a €35 million signing from Sevilla in 2008 and has won five league titles and the Champions League three times at Camp Nou.
