NYSC has not been scrapped – Presidency

NYSC has not been scrapped – Presidency

The federal government has denied scrapping the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). There were reports that the scheme, which was established since 1975 by then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), has been scrapped by President Muhammadu Buhari, alongside post-UMTE.

However, the presidency described the story as unfounded and legally illogical.

“NYSC is a creation of the law. Only another law can repeal it,” Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity said while reacting to the rumour.

FG releases funds for NYSC Batch A Stream II orientation programme

FG releases funds for NYSC Batch A Stream II orientation programme

Funds meant for the mobilization of Batch ‘A’ Stream two of the National Youth Service Corps members were released on Tuesday by the federal government. The management of the NYSC, while revealing this added that the programme which is billed to begin on Saturday, will go on as planned.

The prospective corps members had shown concerns after the Director-General of the NYSC, Sule Kazaure, told the senate committee on youth and sports that the programme might be postponed as a result of lack of funds.

He had said, “We are presently at a loss in NYSC now as there is no money for us to mobilise thousands of prospective corps members in the Batch A Stream 2 to camp this Saturday.”

“This is in spite of efforts made by us to get things done in that direction several weeks ago.

“The problem staring us in the face arose from the N13 billion shortfall we had in the 2016 budget estimate which the agency made strong request for its provision during budget defence.”

But in a statement issued on Tuesday, NYSC said the funds have now been released, commending the government’s effort for intervening in the matter.

The statement reads, “The National Youth Service Corps wishes to express profound appreciation of the federal government’s intervention through the release of funds for the 2016 Batch ’A’ stream II orientation course.

“Consequent upon government’s intervention, Management is pleased to inform prospective Corps members, parents, guardians and the rest of the general public that the 2016 Batch ‘A’ Stream II orientation course will hold as planned.

“As a reminder, all are to note that the Orientation Course will commence on Saturday, 21st May, 2016 and end on Monday, 6th June, 2016.

“Therefore, all prospective corps members are advised to print their call-up letters online or collect same from their respective institutions of graduation as applicable.

“They are to report to the orientation camps in their states of deployment whose addresses would be shown on their call-up letters.

“Management wishes all prospective Corps members a hitch-free and rewarding orientation course.”

“The rumour is frivolous and unfounded. Management remains focused as preparations continue for a successful Orientation course scheduled to commence on April 27, 2016.”

NOUN graduates to join NYSC, Law School programme soon – Director

NOUN graduates to join NYSC, Law School programme soon – Director

Graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) would soon be allowed to participate in the National Youth Service Corps Scheme (NYSC) and the Nigerian Law School Programme. The Director, Ilorin Study Centre of NOUN, Mr Michael Abikoye, made this known on Thursday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin.

Abikoye, who was NOUN first Acting Registrar, attributed the exclusion of NOUN graduates from the scheme and law school to public misunderstanding of the difference between Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and part time studies.

He expressed optimism that with the ongoing talk between the management of the Open University and the relevant stakeholders, NOUN students would be absorbed into the scheme.

“The denial of our graduates in participating in the NYSC scheme is based essentially on the general misunderstanding of difference in concept between open and distance learning system, which Nigerians have equated with part time studies.

“But open and distance learning is not exactly the same thing as part time study.

“Open and Distance Learning is a standard form of education and it is the vogue in many advanced countries today.

“Incidentally, most of NOUN programmes are accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) that accredits programmes of conventional Nigerian Universities.

“Our course materials are prepared by seasoned academics in the conventional university system and they go through rigorous and thorough process of editing and printing before they are released to the students.

“It may not surprise you to know that even in the conventional universities; our course materials are being used by some lecturers to produce their own handouts for students.

“That shows you the quality of our materials and by extension, the quality of our products,” Abikoye added.

Abikoye said that NOUN has standard and functioning laboratory at its headquarters and in some selected study centres across the country. He said what NOUN has done in some centres where it has no laboratory of its own was to go into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the neighbouring conventional universities.

“At the Ilorin Study Centre here for instance, we have gone into collaboration with the University of Ilorin, so that NOUN students can avail themselves with laboratory facilities there.

“This was particularly meant for the students of our School of Health Science and ICT,” he said.

Abikoye disclosed that NOUN has set up two skills acquisition vocational centres at graduate, post graduate diploma and certificate levels to fill the gap left behind by conventional universities.
