Boy, 13, and his mum die after triple stabbing in family home

A 13-year-old boy and his mum have died after a triple stabbing in their own home. The woman, in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene and her 13-year-old son died later in hospital.

The boy’s father Peter Wilkinson, pictured below, has been taken to hospital with stab wounds where his injuries are serious. A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing following the incident on Greyhound Lane at 8am.

Dudley Police Superintendent Lee Kendrick, said: ‘What has unfolded here this morning is horrific and heart-breaking. Police and ambulance were confronted with an awful scene: a man, woman and boy all with very serious stab injuries

‘The woman and boy were found in the house and the man in the garden.

‘Tragically there was nothing that could be done to save the woman – and her son later died in hospital from his injuries. Our hearts go out to the victims’ family and friends at this devastating news.

‘Clearly our investigation is at a very early stage but we understand the suspect was known to the family and may have been living at the address – although he is not a family relative. We don’t think this was a burglary or a robbery.

‘Our investigation is progressing at pace and we are working to understand exactly what the relationship was between the man and the family.

‘At this stage we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.’

The suspect stole a Land Rover from the large detached house but police arrested him when he crashed the vehicle around 30 minutes later on nearby Norton Road.

Shocking pictures show a mangled police van that residents say was smashed into head-on by the stolen vehicle on Osmaston Road.

Other images show the Discovery 4X4 crumpled after crashing into a wall on Norton Road between Beech Road and Stanley Road.

A woman who lives on Osmaston Road, but who did not want to be named, said: ‘We were in bed when we were suddenly woken up by helicopters circling very low overhead at about 8.15am.

‘About 15 minutes later we heard sirens and went to our window where we saw the smashed police van. There weren’t any other vehicles involved though.

‘We then heard off neighbours that a Land Rover had smashed into a wall on Norton Road.

‘We just thought it was just a stolen car, but now we’ve heard what’s happened it’s awful.

France truck attack: Death toll rises to 84

An attack in Nice, France, where a man rammed a truck into a crowd of people left 84 dead and another 18 in a “critical condition”, interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said Friday.

An unidentified gunman barrelled the truck two kilometres (1.3 miles) through a crowd that had been enjoying a fireworks display for France’s national day in the French Riviera resort on Thursday, before being shot dead by police.

Security forces and ambulances raced to the scene, and authorities from the local Alpes-Maritimes prefecture urged residents to stay indoors. One eyewitness reported seeing the driver slam the lorry into revellers celebrating Bastille Day on the city’s famous Promenade des Anglais.

He then emerged from the vehicle and started shooting, local resident Wassim Bouhlel told news agency AP.

“There was carnage on the road, dead bodies everywhere,” he said.

The BBC reports that shots were exchanged between the police and the occupants of the lorry. A journalist with the Nice Matin newspaper reported from the scene that there was “a lot of blood and without doubt many injured”.

An Agence France-Presse reporter said the incident took place as the firework display was ending, adding: “We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around.”

Another image on Twitter showed a white lorry stopped in the middle of the promenade with damage to its front, and four police officers observing it while taking cover behind a palm tree.

An AFP reporter described seeing a white van driving at high speed onto the famed Promenade des Anglais as people were leaving after the annual Bastille Day celebration display.

“We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around,” he said, adding that the incident took place near the city’s famed Hotel Negresco.

Terrified pedestrians screamed as they fled the area. “It was absolute chaos,” he said.

A huge security cordon was established closing off the central Place Massena by 2330 GMT, another AFP correspondent said.

Jennifer Keshi arrives Nigeria ahead of father’s burial

Jennifer Keshi arrives Nigeria ahead of father’s burial

Jennifer Keshi, the first daughter of late former coach of Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi, has arrived Nigeria from the U.S. to coordinate the burial plans with family members. This is contained in a statement signed by Ben Alaiya, former media officer to the Super Eagles.

The statement said the Federal Government through the Sports Ministry had indicated interest to participate in the burial ceremony.

According to the statement, a family source said that the only controversy at the moment was whether Keshi should be buried in Benin City, his adopted home or at Illah, his ancestral home.

“That will be easily settled,” the statement said.

It said that there was also a tentative burial date of July 28 that had not been totally agreed on.

The statement also said that all rights would be accorded to Stephen Keshi Jr during the burial because he was actually the adopted son of the late soccer legend.

“His real names we know, but we have no problem with him.

“He will take part in all rites and we pray that we should not drag controversy into the burial of a great man like Keshi,” it said.

It also said that there were already indications that many state governments had indicated interest to participate in the burial ceremony.

The statement added that the Keshi family had already given an assurance that the burial would be all-inclusive as Keshi, during his life time, had no foe.
We are not owing Shuaibu Amodu N25 million – Edo Govt

We are not owing Shuaibu Amodu N25 million – Edo Govt

The Edo State Government has denied owing the late former Chief Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Shuaibu Amodu, N25 million.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Peter Okhiria, on Wednesday, the government described as totally false and misleading reports that the state government owed the late Amodu Shuaibu N25 million.

The Edo government also described as patently false the contents of a letter in circulation purported written by the late Shuaibu Amodu, adding that the letter contained claims that have no bearing with the financial transactions of Edo State Government.

”All workers, from lowest to the highest paid, including Committee Members are enrolled in our Oracle-based payment system and we do not owe anyone,” Okhiria stated.

Here is the full statement issued by the Edo government on the matter:

Amodu Shaibu: Our Story – Edo Govt

The attention of Edo State Government has been drawn to a report in the newspapers and on several online platforms to the effect that the State Government owed Mr. Amodu Shaibu, the Technical Director of the Nigerian Football Federation, who died in the night Friday, June 10, to the tune of N25 million.

Let us state from the onset that his death is a huge loss to Edo State and Nigeria. We are certain that no one can fill the void of the shoes left behind by Coach Shaibu. He was not just a proud Edo son but also a perfect gentleman, community leader among other callings.

This is why he was invited to work with our young footballers after he was unceremoniously relieved of his appointment as Coach having qualified Nigeria for the World Cup. We remain deeply pained by his very sudden and untimely death.

The facts:

The late Amodu Shaibu worked with the State Government, on a fixed-term contract basis, as Consultant/Technical Adviser of Edo State Football Development Programme, a Football Academy established by the State Government to tap the talents of Edo youths and turn them into world stars.

In deference to his pedigree, and having informed the Governor of how he was shabbily treated by the Nigerian Football Federation after the World Cup qualification he helped secure for the nation, and also admitting that the new job to manage the State’s Football Academy had lesser attraction than the National team Coach job he had, Amodu Shaibu was placed on a monthly salary of N2 million, which is hundred per cent better than what he was earning as Coach of the National Football team, and also making him the highest paid official of the Edo State Government.

The said fixed-term contract was however not renewed on expiration based on the dwindling revenues and the necessary cuts in government spending.

It is basic that a fixed-term contract ends automatically when the agreed end date is reached and the employer doesn’t have to give any notice. This means that a fixed-term contract is deemed terminated if not renewed.

In spite of the fact that the said contract was not renewed, the late Amodu Shaibu continued to draw his monthly wage of N2 million until it was stopped by the Office of the Accountant General in June, 2015, following the discovery after a staff biometric verification exercise.

The late Amodu Shaibu thereafter tendered his ‘letter of resignation’, in September 2015, even when the said contract was not renewed and had been deemed terminated, following its non-renewal.

However, on Wednesday, 8th June 2016, two days before his unfortunate death, the late Shaibu submitted a letter to the Secretary to Edo State Government, dated same day, claiming unpaid salaries for four months, totaling N8 million only.

In the said letter entitled: “Resignation of Appointment as Consultant/Technical Adviser. Re: Request for Payment of Outstanding Salaries”, Amodu Shaibu stated, inter alia:

“May I respectfully recall that I resigned my appointment as Consultant/Technical Adviser of Football Development in Edo State with effect from 30th September, 2015. The Resignation was as a result of my appointment as Technical Director of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). The Governor graciously approved this resignation with effect from 30th September 2015.

“I humbly wish to inform the Governor that my monthly salary was stopped by the Accountant-General with effect from June 2015. As a result, I was not paid for the month of June, July, August and September, 2015. The reason the Accountant-General gave for withholding my salary for the period was that he expected the approval of the Governor extending my contract for the next year. Since I have resigned my appointment, there is no need now for such approval.

“However, this letter is predicated on the need for the Accountant-General to pay my outstanding salaries for the period of June-September 2015. As a result, therefore, I humbly wish to request the Governor to kindly consider and approve the payment of my outstanding salaries for the period indicated above.”

Although the late Shaibu’s contract had long expired even before his ‘Resignation Letter’ which ‘took effect’ from September 30, 2015, and even though Edo State Government did not owe him unpaid wages as the contract was not renewed, the State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, however, approved his claim for N8 million, purely on compassionate grounds.

It is therefore totally false and misleading that the State Government owed the late Amodu Shaibu the sum of N25 million. We, therefore, make bold to state that the contents of a letter in circulation, purportedly written by the late Shaibu Amodu, is patently false. The letter contains claims that have no bearing with the financial transactions of Edo State Government. All workers, from lowest to the highest paid, including Committee Members are enrolled in our Oracle-based payment system and we do not owe anyone.

While we still mourn the unfortunate demise of this great Edo son and Nigerian, whose death has left a deep hole in our hearts and who contributed immensely to Sports development in Edo State, this clarification has become necessary to put an end to the misinformation and outright falsehood being peddled by political hawks who want to benefit from Amodu Shaibu’s death by portraying the State Government in bad light.

It is unfortunate and sad that while Edolites and Nigerians are still mourning this great icon, mischief makers have gone to town to reap from his death by crying more than the bereaved.

Even in death, Amodu Shaibu has our respect, commendation and solidarity.

30 dead as bus falls into ravine in India

30 dead as bus falls into ravine in India

A bus skidded off a hill road into a ravine in north-eastern India killing 30 passengers, police said Wednesday. The accident happened Tuesday night near Sonapur in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya state.

“Thirty passengers died on the spot. We have rescued five people. They are in critical condition,” said senior district police official Lethindra Sangma.

The ravine was over 150 metres deep, Sangma said and rescue operations were difficult.

“The impact of the fall was such that passengers were thrown out of the bus around the accident spot.

“We don’t know why the bus skidded off, but it had been raining and it was dark,” Sangma said.

The bus was travelling from Silchar to Guwahati – both in Assam state, through Meghalaya. According to Indian government data ,146,000 people died in road accidents in 2015 which works out at 400 deaths a day.

India’s high rate of fatal traffic accidents, an average of 135,000 people annually for the past five years, is mostly blamed on poorly maintained roads and vehicles or negligent driving.

Reps urge NFF to pay Shuaibu, Keshi entitlements

Reps urge NFF to pay Shuaibu, Keshi entitlements

Reps urge NFF to pay Shuaibu, Keshi entitlements

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to immediately pay entitlements due to late former Super Eagles’ coaches, Stephen Keshi and Amodu Shuaibu.

The house mandated its Committee on Sports to liaise with the NFF to ensure that the payments were made without delay. This was sequel to a motion under “matters of urgent public importance” sponsored by Rep. Sam Onuigbo (PDP-Abia), which was unanimously adopted.

Presenting the motion, Onuigbo said that payment of the entitlements would serve as a conscious effort toward cushioning any pains and financial pressures on the families of the deceased. Onuigbo expressed worry that Shuaibu was being owed arrears of salaries running into many months.

According to him, Shuaibu was equally being owed by Edo State Government, having worked as the Director of the State Youth Football Development Agency, a position from which he resigned last year.

The lawmaker, who said that the two coaches served the country meritoriously, pointed out that their deaths were huge losses to Nigeria.

“These iconic Nigerians exercised leadership in football administration and impacted positively on the nation and the world in ways that their outstanding accomplishments brought happiness to Nigerians.

“Even in the periods of economic and political adversities, they died at a time like this when football as a sport enjoyed by Nigerians is taking a nose dive.

“Now, their demise is not only a huge loss to Nigeria and their families but to the international community as well, and we can understand the pains both families and Nigerians are currently going through.

“Nigerians and the international community as a whole have lost the experiences of these patriots and heroes of football, whose services have been lost forever.”

Onuigbo further urged the Federal Government to immortalise the football icons who served the country selflessly so as to encourage younger ones to always give their best for the development of the country.

The two former national football coaches died within a space of four days. Keshi, 54, died on Wednesday, while Shuaibu, 58, died on Saturday.

Jide Kosoko’s wife, Henrietta, dies at 53

Jide Kosoko’s wife, Henrietta, dies at 53

Yoruba actor and movie producer, Prince Jide Kosoko, has lost one of his wives, Henrietta Kosoko.
Henrietta, who was also an actress, was said to have died at the Sacred Heart Catholic Hospital, Lantoro, Abeokuta on Monday morning. She was 53-year old.

A source in the industry who pleaded anonymity said the actress developed complications after an automobile accident she had late last year, while travelling in her car. The car reportedly suffered brakes failure and crashed, with Henriatta sustaining injuries in the head.

Since then, she was said to have regularly been visiting the Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment. Her condition was said to have deteriorated about a week ago when she was reportedly brought back to the hospital, where she eventually died on Monday.

But another report had it that she slumped and went into a coma on Monday morning and she was rushed down to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead. Efforts made by one of Punch correspondents who visited the Emergency Unit of the hospital to get details of the incident did not yield any positive result.

The members of staff who spoke to him said she was not brought to the unit, as one of them explained that she might have been taken to a private ward. Meanwhile, her remains was said to have been deposited in a morgue.

Although efforts to speak with Kosoko did not yield fruits, a Yoruba actor based in Abeokuta, Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Baba Latin, confirmed Henrietta’s death but he did not give details.

When Punch correspondent called him on the telephone for confirmation, he said, “It is true.”

Head of the Ogun State Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Producers Association of Nigeria, Dr. Samuel Adesanya, said he also heard about the death of Henrietta, but the details were sketchy.

Speaking in an emotion-laden tone, Adesanya said, “We heard today that she (Henrietta) died in Sacred Heart Hospital in Abeokuta. We also gathered that she was taken to the hospital a week ago.

“She had a terrible accident last year and she had been accessing treatment at the hospital. It is a very sad incident. We learnt her remains had been deposited in the mortuary.”

Adesanya described the late Delta-State born actress as an “excellent actress, well behaved and good wife, who displayed utmost dignity in everything she did.”

Kosoko had, in the past, lost two wives and he is now left with one, Bimbo. Meanwhile, some Yoruba actresses have reacted to Henrietta’s demise.

One of them, Dayo Amusa, described her death as sad.

She said, “It is sad and it came as a shock.”

Also, Moji Olaiya, who said her death was a rude shock, prayed God to have mercy on the soul of the late actress.

She stated, “It was a rude shock. I don’t know what to say but I pray that Allah will have mercy on her soul. May her soul rest in peace.”

Also, various film-makers, especially on the Ibadan Film Circle online forum, expressed shock at the actress’ passage.

Man claims he beat 11-year-old son to death after he had sex with his kid sister

Man claims he beat 11-year-old son to death after he had sex with his kid sister

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command at the weekend arrested a 34-year-old man identified simply as Solomon for allegedly beating his 11-year-old son, Victor, to death. Solomon killed his 11-year-old son after he allegedly caught him having sex with his eight-year-old sister.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Wilson Inalegwu, who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, said the suspect, a resident of Tasha Gwagwa area, a suburb of Abuja, has been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, of the Command.

Solomon, who hails from Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, said he had been receiving several reports on the act.

He said, “Victor was my son, an 11-year-old boy. I had been receiving bad reports about him. The height of it was that he started sleeping with his sister, who is eight-years-old.

“Around 4.00 pm, I came back from work and met Victor sleeping with his sister in my bedroom. The stepmother was not at home.

“In anger and a bid to punish him, I picked up a stick and beat him severely.

“In the process, he began convulsing and then lost consciousness the next day. He was rushed to the Gwarinpa General Hospital by the neighbours where he died soon after he got to the hospital.

“I was not at home on the day he lost consciousness.

“My neighbours summoned me to the hospital by phone and when I got to there, I was told my son had died from internal bleeding as a result of the severe beating I had given him a day earlier.

“I wept when the doctor told me that my son had died.

“I didn’t have the intention to kill my son. I was trying to correct him because of the immoral act he committed.

“How can I beat my son to death? I couldn’t believe what I saw. I only acted in anger; I never wanted to kill my son,” Solomon said.

Solomon’s arrest reportedly came after the doctor at the Gwarinpa hospital called officers from a nearby police station.

El-Rufai condoles with Sani over mother’s death

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, on Tuesday, paid an unexpected visit to the senator representing Kaduna-Central senatorial district, Sheu Sani, who lost his mother recently. There had been no love lost between the two leaders of the All Progressives Congress since el-Rufai emerged as the governor about a year ago.

El-Rufai, who recently returned from an overseas trip, got to Sani’s family house in the Tudun Wada area of Sokoto by 8pm amid cheers from supporters. Particularly, many of the supporters hailed the governor for identifying with the bereaved despite their political differences.

The governor was in company with some of his aides, who included his Deputy Chief of Staff, Bala Yunusa; and Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, among others.

El-Rufai attended a religious prayer session for the repose of the soul of the deceased, Hajiya Fatima Sani, on Tuesday. Sani received the governor at the entrance of his house and later ushered him inside amid shouts from their supporters.

The Kaduna APC had threatened to suspend Sani, who was accused of engaging in anti-party moves.
The party also criticised the senator for being too critical of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government.

13 killed in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway fire

13 killed in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway fire

No fewer than 13 persons have been killed after fire gutted five vehicles at the Lotto, Mowe end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday. While some of the deceased were reported to have been scooping fuel from a fallen tanker, others were said to be passengers in a commercial bus and two Hilux vans.

According to PUNCH Metro, four other persons were injured in the inferno, including an official of the Ogun State Fire Service, identified as Ayodele Adetayo. The injured victims were said to have been rushed to private hospitals before being transferred to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital.

It was gathered that at about 3pm on Monday, a fuel tanker belonging to Total Nigeria Plc, had fallen while trying to avoid crashing into a herd of cows that had strayed onto the expressway. Four of the cows were reportedly killed just as some fuel spilled onto the road and into gutter.

Punch correspondents were told that the herdsmen immediately fled the scene after residents attempted to mob them. Policemen from the Redemption Camp division were said to have removed the dead cows, and contacted Total to send another truck for fuel transfer.

A new truck arrived at the area around 11pm on Monday and was able to load the fuel from the fallen tanker with the help of the Ogun State Fire Service officials. It was learnt that after the evacuation, the fallen tanker was towed away, while the new tanker also left the area.

It was gathered that some residents came out and started scooping the fuel spilled into the gutter. Punch correspondents gathered that at about 1am, a Sports Utility Vehicle, which had a burst tyre, drove on its rim, which ignited the fire that also engulfed it.

The fire was said to have engulfed an 18-seater bus driving behind it, two Hilux vans, a Dangote truck and a fire service truck, which was rounding off operation. Some occupants of the vehicles were trapped and the fire burnt them beyond recognition.

An eyewitness, who gave her name only as Sunmibare, said the fire service men were rolling their hose back into the truck, when the fire started. She added that the fire service official that was injured, Adetayo, was rushed to Temitope Clinic – a private health facility in the area.

She said, “One of the fire service men was injured. The fire razed their truck and a Dangote truck beside it. There was no hope of putting out the fire since the fire service men had become helpless. The fire raged till about 7am.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said 13 charred remains were recovered from the scene.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said, “The road was soaked with fuel after the tanker fell. The police and the fire service men were trying to neutralise the power of the petrol when fire broke out. The fire service truck, which was on duty, was the first to be burnt.

“No fewer than 13 people were burnt beyond recognition. About five vehicles were also burnt. We urge those whose relatives are missing to come forward for possible identification because for now we cannot recognise anybody.”

But the Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mowe, Oludare Ogunjobi, said there was no casualty.

He said, “We had already secured the area and removed the tanker from the scene. But some people came and started scooping fuel. Suddenly, there was an explosion and in the process, the fire service multi-purpose tanker and other four vehicles were burnt. No life was lost and nobody sustained any injury. We were able to clear the road after some hours of gridlock.”

Also, the Head of Operations, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Ibafo, K.A. Ojerinde, said four persons sustained injuries, adding that some people were feared dead.

He said, “About five cars were burnt and some people feared dead. We have moved the affected vehicles from the expressway. Three of the fire service men sustained injuries. They have been transferred to OOUTH for treatment.”

When PUNCH Metro visited Temitope Clinic where one of the survivors was taken to, a matron, who gave her name as Titilayo Salisu, said the victim had been referred to a government hospital.

“The fire service official was brought in around 1am. He was injured in the arms, hands and face. Some part of his limbs were also damaged. After stabilising him, he was referred to a government hospital,” she said.

Six years after: DaGrin lives on

Six years after: DaGrin lives on

Just a day to his performance at the return of Sigma Club’s Havana Concert at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan in 2010, Oladapo Olaitan ‘Dagrin’ Olaonipekun died from injuries he sustained in a ghastly motor accident about a week earlier.

He died on April 22, 2010. He was just 22 years old, but his unique style of rap music was already very popular. In the early hours of April 14, 2010 Dagrin had been involved in a lone accident, colliding with a stationary articulated vehicle in front of Alakara Police Station, off Agege Motor Road, Mushin, Lagos.

Before he gave up his ghost, He had first been treated at Tai Solarin Hospital, Mushin but was later transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, where doctors declared him dead after efforts to save his life failed.

Though he lived a short life, his style of rap is still influencing the music scene. Artistes like Olamide, lil Kesh, Phyno, Reminisce and many others are some of the best examples of Dagrin’s influence on the Nigerian rap scene.

A yet-to-be identified woman was yesterday killed on Housing Road in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital by a truck driver whose vehicle allegedly failed brake. Eye-witnesses told DAILY POST that the woman was hit by the truck with registration number ADK 13 XA and the Ekiti State Tipper Permit details, 2016 EK, /ADK 008, at about 7am while she had just climbed a commercial motorbike which was to take her to a place. Rider of the motorbike, popularly known as Okada, was also wounded in the accident and has been rushed to the hospital.

Eye-witnesses further said that the driver of the trailer ran away before anyone could rush to the scene to rescue the victims. When Daily Post reporter visited the scene of accident around 9am yesterday, officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission, ( FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were already on ground managing the development.

A representative of the FRSC and Public Enlightenment Officer of the commission in the state command, Mohammed Olowo told Our Correspondent that while the body of the deceased had been taken to the state mortuary in Ekiti State University teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), the wounded Okada rider has also been taken to an undisclosed hospital.

Giving details on the accident, he said: “The accident occurred as a result of break failure. The truck hit a woman who had climbed an Okada which stopped to take her to her destination. The woman died instantly, while the Okada rider was badly wounded. We don’t know the whereabouts of the driver now but the association of tipper drivers in the state have come in. The truck would be impounded at the Police station. We have also rushed the Okada rider to the hospital because he was seriously wounded. We are appealing to members of the public who know the dead woman to come to the state mortuary for her body.”
