Tribunal reserves judgment in Kogi governorship election

Parties involved in the Kogi election tussle on Tuesday closed their petition before the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal for kogi sitting in Abuja.

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, Counsel to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), one of the parties in the matter, Mr Oba Maduabuchi, told the tribunal that he had filed the party’s final written address.

Maduabuchi prayed the court to nullify the election of Gov. Yahaya Bello, on the grounds that he did poll the highest majority of votes during the election. He also told the tribunal that the election of the governor was devoid of the principle of the Electoral Act hence, should be nullified.

Counsel to the governor, Mr Babatunde Daudu, prayed the tribunal to discountenance and dismiss the ADC petition.

``The ADC petition lacks merit and there is no standard ground for which the petition should be given victory,’’ Daudu said.

The Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Halima Muhammad, reserved judgment after all the parties had filed their final written addresses.

Muhammad said that the judgment date would be communicated to all parties in the matter.

Supreme Court upholds Ishaku’s election as Taraba governor

The Supreme Court has upheld the election of Mr. Darius Ishaku as governor Taraba State. The court upheld the governorship election after dismissing the appeal filed by All Progressives Congress candidate in the election, Aisha Al-Hassan.

The court fixed February 22 to give reasons for its judgment.

BREAKING: Kogi election petitions tribunal moved to Abuja

The Kogi State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Lokoja has been relocated to Abuja for further sittings. The Secretary to the Tribunal, Mr. Akanji Akinlabi, who disclosed this in Lokoja, said the relocation was based on the directive of the President of the Appeal Court, Justice Zainab Bulkashua.

The three-man tribunal, which has Justice Halima Mohammed as Chairman with Justice Patricia Ajoku and Justice Ogbogo Ejembi as members, commenced sitting in Lokoja on January 11, with six petitions.

One of the petitions was filed by Mr. James Faleke, the running mate to the late All Progressives Congress candidate, Abubakar Audu, against INEC. Other petitioners are former governor and Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the governorship election, Capt. Idris Wada; the Labour Party, Progressive Peoples’ Alliance, the African Democratic Congress and All Progressives Grand Alliance.

All the petitions are challenging the return of Alhaji Yahaya Bello as winner of the governorship election in the state.

Supreme Court sacks Stella Oduah, Andy Ubah, names replacements

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has sacked Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Anambra state lawmakers including Stella Oduah, Andy Ubah from the senate. It would be recalled that an Appeal court had earlier sacked Senator Uche Ekwunife Anambra Central) ordering fresh elections within 90 days.

The apex court then named Anambra at the Senate now Chris Ubah (Anambra South), John Emeka (Anambra North) and Annie Okonkwo (Anambra Central). They were sacked by the court in a ruling delivered today, January 29.

It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission had declared them winners after the senatorial election held last year. Ekwunife subsequently dumped her party, the PDP, for the ruling All Progressives Congress.
