Two of South African TV-viewers’ favourite shows are up for International Emmys.

The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has unveiled the nominees for the International Emmy Awards.

Among them are Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola, pictured, a collaboration between eNCA (e News Channel Africa) and Diprente – one of four nominees in the comedy category.

And in the “non-scripted entertainment” category, MasterChef South Africa – its first season,
won by Deena Naidoo – by Quizzical Pictures and Lucky Bean Media, is one of four nominees.

Winners will receive awards on November 25 at the 41st International Emmy Awards Gala in New York.

Upon hearing the news, Gola tweeted: “Late Nite News gets an Emmy nomination. This life thing is humbling.”

His colleague on the show, Ugandan-born comedian David Kibuuka, tweeted: “Well done 2the team & the fans,but most importantly thanks to Juju & Jacob who gave us material for days” – a reference to the serially satirised pair, former ANC Youth League president Julius Malema and President Jacob Zuma.

Pierre Cloete, M-Net’s Channel Director, said of the Emmy nomination: “To have the international benchmark of TV award ceremonies recognise MasterChef South Africa season 1 with a nomination for Best International Reality Series is not only an honour, but also a huge endorsement to all parties involved.

“We’d like to congratulate the series producers – Quizzical Pictures and Lucky Bean Media – for creating such a high quality series. We look forward to hearing the results of this prestigious nomination.”

Britain leads Emmy nominations

Sean Bean has been nominated for an International Emmy for his role in Accused

Britain and Brazil shared the lead for International Emmy nominations with six apiece, including acting nods for Sean Bean and Sheridan Smith.

Sean Bean, best known for his roles in The Lord Of The Rings and Game Of Thrones, received a nomination for his performance as a transvestite teacher in Accused. The BBC One series, created by writer-producer Jimmy McGovern, is also up for best drama series.

Sheridan, known for her comedic roles on stage and TV, was recognised for playing the wife of Ronnie Biggs, who was involved in the 1963 Great Train Robbery, in the ITV drama series Mrs Biggs, for which she won the BAFTA TV Award for best actress.

The other British nominees include Chris O'Dowd's comedy Moone Boy, BBC documentary Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender, and Secret State for TV movie/mini-series.

Britain also led the Kids Awards with four nominations, followed by three apiece for France and Japan. The British children's programming nominees include Ben And Holly's Little Kingdom, Room On A Broom, Same But Different and Pet School.


The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced that 36 nominees from 19 countries will be competing in nine categories for the International Emmys, which honour excellence in TV programming outside the US.

France had three nominations, while Germany, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and South Korea each had two nominations.

Lost and Person Of Interest producer JJ Abrams, who is directing the new Star Wars movie, will be presented with the honorary 2013 International Emmy Founders Award.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony on November 25 at the Hilton New York Hotel in New York.
