We haven’t blacklisted any transport operator – FRSC

We haven’t blacklisted any transport operator – FRSC

The Federal Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has not indicted or blacklisted any major transport operator in the country for accident-related issue.

Mr Bisi Kazeem, the Head, Media and Strategy of FRSC, gave the clarification on Wednesday while reacting to a report that the corps had blacklisted “Peace Mass Transit Operator” for involvement in accidents.

Kazeem, however, clarified that the company was involved in 10 accidents in the last six months which claimed 22 lives and not 37 people. He said the corps had invited and interfaced with the PMT on the incident.

“The essence of this clarification is just to make Nigerians know that contrary to the way it was reported, FRSC never indicted PMT and FRSC never blacklisted PMT.

“It is a routine interface when we noticed upsurge in road traffic accidents involving PMT and which is not limited to them.

“We came out with a statistics to show that about 22 people were killed (in accident involving PMT) in recent time.

“But unfortunately, when we sent the press release out, there was an error where 37 were mentioned. It is actually 22.

“As a responsible and responsive organisation, we felt, we should correct the mistake because we are not here to spoil business for anybody. Our own concern is safety and the way forward,” Kazeem said.

According to him, “once we – FRSC observe a trend, may be a particular fleet operator is getting more involved in crashes than expected where more lives are being lost such organisation is invited”.

He explained that, that was being done through a department in the corps’ Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS) being supervised by the Corps Transport Standardisation Officer (CTSO).

“So, having known through our record through the RTSSS that Peace Mass Transit of recent have been getting involved in accidents with some lives lost, a letter of invitation was sent to them,” he said.

Kazeem said that other fleet operators had been invited in the past to give reason for their incessant involvement in accidents.

“As I am talking to you, another six major fleet operators are being invited to Abuja in the next one week for the same purpose,” he said.

The FRSC and PMT met on July 13 following incessant involvement of the some vehicles in the fleet of the company in accidents.

They had in a communiqué, thereafter, agreed for the continuous inspection of the company”s vehicles by the corps to ensure compliance with RTSS by the company, among others.

FRSC convicts 62 motorists in Jos

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Plateau has convicted 62 motorists of various traffic offences in Jos. The Public Education Officer of the commission in the state, Mr Andrew Bala, disclosed on Sunday that the offenders were arrested during a mobile court proceedings carried out by its officers and men on May 7.

He said the exercise took place on some highways within Jos-Bukuru metropolis. According to him, mobile court has become a veritable tool that the corps uses to curtail the many anomalies on highways to reduce road traffic crashes.

“Our men on patrol actually arrested 63 motorists but one was discharged and acquitted while 62 were found guilty and convicted.

“We mostly use the mobile courts these days because we feel there is the need to give motorists fair hearing, and for me it is a better deal,’’ he said.

He added that the most prevalent offences were overloading, use of worn-out tyres, vehicle licence violation and driver’s licence violation. Others include use of phone while driving, seatbelt violation and lack of caution signs.

Bala further explained that none of the convicted motorists were imprisoned; adding that another reason for the mobile court exercise was to rid highways of under-age drivers.

He assured the public that officers and men of the command would make the mobile court exercise as a routine measure to checkmate the excesses of drivers on highways.

13 killed in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway fire

13 killed in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway fire

No fewer than 13 persons have been killed after fire gutted five vehicles at the Lotto, Mowe end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday. While some of the deceased were reported to have been scooping fuel from a fallen tanker, others were said to be passengers in a commercial bus and two Hilux vans.

According to PUNCH Metro, four other persons were injured in the inferno, including an official of the Ogun State Fire Service, identified as Ayodele Adetayo. The injured victims were said to have been rushed to private hospitals before being transferred to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital.

It was gathered that at about 3pm on Monday, a fuel tanker belonging to Total Nigeria Plc, had fallen while trying to avoid crashing into a herd of cows that had strayed onto the expressway. Four of the cows were reportedly killed just as some fuel spilled onto the road and into gutter.

Punch correspondents were told that the herdsmen immediately fled the scene after residents attempted to mob them. Policemen from the Redemption Camp division were said to have removed the dead cows, and contacted Total to send another truck for fuel transfer.

A new truck arrived at the area around 11pm on Monday and was able to load the fuel from the fallen tanker with the help of the Ogun State Fire Service officials. It was learnt that after the evacuation, the fallen tanker was towed away, while the new tanker also left the area.

It was gathered that some residents came out and started scooping the fuel spilled into the gutter. Punch correspondents gathered that at about 1am, a Sports Utility Vehicle, which had a burst tyre, drove on its rim, which ignited the fire that also engulfed it.

The fire was said to have engulfed an 18-seater bus driving behind it, two Hilux vans, a Dangote truck and a fire service truck, which was rounding off operation. Some occupants of the vehicles were trapped and the fire burnt them beyond recognition.

An eyewitness, who gave her name only as Sunmibare, said the fire service men were rolling their hose back into the truck, when the fire started. She added that the fire service official that was injured, Adetayo, was rushed to Temitope Clinic – a private health facility in the area.

She said, “One of the fire service men was injured. The fire razed their truck and a Dangote truck beside it. There was no hope of putting out the fire since the fire service men had become helpless. The fire raged till about 7am.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said 13 charred remains were recovered from the scene.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said, “The road was soaked with fuel after the tanker fell. The police and the fire service men were trying to neutralise the power of the petrol when fire broke out. The fire service truck, which was on duty, was the first to be burnt.

“No fewer than 13 people were burnt beyond recognition. About five vehicles were also burnt. We urge those whose relatives are missing to come forward for possible identification because for now we cannot recognise anybody.”

But the Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mowe, Oludare Ogunjobi, said there was no casualty.

He said, “We had already secured the area and removed the tanker from the scene. But some people came and started scooping fuel. Suddenly, there was an explosion and in the process, the fire service multi-purpose tanker and other four vehicles were burnt. No life was lost and nobody sustained any injury. We were able to clear the road after some hours of gridlock.”

Also, the Head of Operations, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Ibafo, K.A. Ojerinde, said four persons sustained injuries, adding that some people were feared dead.

He said, “About five cars were burnt and some people feared dead. We have moved the affected vehicles from the expressway. Three of the fire service men sustained injuries. They have been transferred to OOUTH for treatment.”

When PUNCH Metro visited Temitope Clinic where one of the survivors was taken to, a matron, who gave her name as Titilayo Salisu, said the victim had been referred to a government hospital.

“The fire service official was brought in around 1am. He was injured in the arms, hands and face. Some part of his limbs were also damaged. After stabilising him, he was referred to a government hospital,” she said.
