Walk can enhance mental fitness - Nigerian Air force spokesman

Walk can enhance mental fitness - Nigerian Air force spokesman

Mr Mathias Tsekaa, Spokesman of the Mobility Command, Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Bayelsa, says regular walk and exercise can enhance mental fitness of a person. Tsekaa said this while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Yenagoa on the command’s readiness to hold its annual 10km walk and jog on Saturday.

He said that the importance of walk and jog to one’s physical fitness could not be over emphasised.
He said that the command’s annual exercise scheduled for Saturday was a welcome development and advised officers to partake in the exercise.

The spokesman, however, said that the purpose of the exercise was to further demonstrate personnel readiness for combat at any point in the defence of their fatherland. According to him, the exercise which will take place at the NAF Base along Elebele/AIT Road, Yenagoa, is to maintain NAF personnel’s high level of mental and physical fitness.

``The exercise is in two categories; that is jogging and working. Some officers and men will participate in walk, while some are for jogging.

``The officers and men, who are above 40 years of age, are going to participate in walk, while those that are below 40 will jog.

``At the end of the exercise, we will give awards to the best participants, ranging from first to third position; since there are two activities, the award will also be categorised.

``The walk and jog is an annual event, it has been part of our activities and it has been helping us physically,” said Tsekaa.

Photos: This woman is actually a 64-year-old gran and it’s blowing people’s minds

This woman has a 41-year-old daughter and, yes, they do get mistaken for sisters

We’ve seen enough of those ‘we’re always getting mistaken for sisters!’ headlines to take them with a generous pinch of salt. Often, what they actually mean is, we get mistaken for sisters in really dark rooms, from behind, when you’re squinting a bit.

But, in this case, we think Wendy Ida makes a valid point. The 64-year-old Californian grandmother, who’s mum to 41-year-old Sky, says people often think they’re sisters when they’re out, and we can totally believe it.

So what is her secret to eternal youth?

Sadly, there’s no quick fix – Wendy says her youthful looks are the result of an intense fitness regime. She puts in one-and-a-half to two hours at the gym every day. And she’s been doing it for over two decades now.

She started going to the gym when she was 43, after ending an abusive relationship which left her with low self-esteem. Today, she is a top fitness trainer and life coach in LA.

‘I’m 64 and in the best shape of my life,’ she says. ‘When I say how old I am people don’t believe me and want to see my driving licence. People say I look like I’m in my early thirties. I had someone aged 22 think I was their age.

‘And whenever me and Sky are together people mistake us for sisters. It happens so often.’

As well as doing cardio and weights at the gym every day, Wendy often runs home. She also enjoys salsa and hip hop dancing. Oh, and she entered her first bodybuilding competition at the age of 57.

And on her 60th birthday, she celebrated by setting a Guinness World Record for doing 37 burpees in one minute. As you do. Wendy now focuses on inspiring others to get fit whatever their age. ‘I want to be an inspiration to everyone who says, “I’m too old and can’t do it”,’ she says.

‘Do a little exercise and work your way up and don’t take no for an answer,’ she instructs.

It’s both impressive and, for someone half her age who hasn’t been inside a gym since circa 1998, more than a little terrifying. See photos below....
