Security officials discover baby factory in Jos

13 persons have been arrested in Jos, Plateau State, for allegedly operating a baby factory along old Bukuru park, following a tip-off by a victim of the syndicate. Those arrested included nine males and four females.

The arrest which was made by men of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) followed information from one Happiness John who became a victim of the suspects.

OPSH Commander, Major General Rogers Nicholas said the group had a ready market for the sale of infants in Abuja and Lafiya in Nasarawa State.

Mildred Luke who was visibly pregnant, said she was impregnated by one of the men now at large. She said, “They promised me N350,000 for a boy and N300,000 for a baby girl while N400,000 will be paid to me if I delivered twins.”

FRSC convicts 62 motorists in Jos

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Plateau has convicted 62 motorists of various traffic offences in Jos. The Public Education Officer of the commission in the state, Mr Andrew Bala, disclosed on Sunday that the offenders were arrested during a mobile court proceedings carried out by its officers and men on May 7.

He said the exercise took place on some highways within Jos-Bukuru metropolis. According to him, mobile court has become a veritable tool that the corps uses to curtail the many anomalies on highways to reduce road traffic crashes.

“Our men on patrol actually arrested 63 motorists but one was discharged and acquitted while 62 were found guilty and convicted.

“We mostly use the mobile courts these days because we feel there is the need to give motorists fair hearing, and for me it is a better deal,’’ he said.

He added that the most prevalent offences were overloading, use of worn-out tyres, vehicle licence violation and driver’s licence violation. Others include use of phone while driving, seatbelt violation and lack of caution signs.

Bala further explained that none of the convicted motorists were imprisoned; adding that another reason for the mobile court exercise was to rid highways of under-age drivers.

He assured the public that officers and men of the command would make the mobile court exercise as a routine measure to checkmate the excesses of drivers on highways.

Fire razes118 shops in Kabong Market, Jos

A raging night inferno razed 118 shops at the Kabong market in Jos North on Thursday morning, NAN reports. A NAN correspondent, who visited the market, could not access the burnt section as some shops were still in flames.

Others also had thick smoke billowing from them, making visibility very difficult. The actual cause of the fire could not be ascertained, but Mr Christopher Jama, Chairman, Kabong Market Traders Association, who briefed the governor– when he visited the scene– said the fire started by 4:00am.

Jama claimed that the fire was caused by an electrical spark when public power supply was restored in the night. He told Gov. Simon Lalong that 118 shops were completely burnt, and noted that goods destroyed included bags of maize, beans, rice, and poultry products.

He appealed to the governor to come to the aid of the affected traders ‘whose means of livelihood had been destroyed’. Lalong, who expressed “deep shock” at the development, promised to remodel the market and also address the traders plight.

“Government was already working towards remodeling before the inferno,” he said.

He however, expressed gratitude to God that no life was lost. The governor directed the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce to liaise with the market union to get details of the incident.
NAN reports that the market was still inaccessible as at the time of the governor’s visit as smoke was still billowing from the burnt shops.

Man hacks 80 years old mother to death

A middle aged man, Bravo Kunde, said to be a junior staff in a branch of an old generation bank in Jos, in the early hours of yesterday, allegedly murdered his 80-year-old mother in cold blood. The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Emmanuel Abuh, confirmed the incident which occurred at Jenta Mangoro community of Jos North local government area.

The deceased, identified as Mama Yakubu, was said to have sustained head injuries as a results of machete cuts inflicted on her by her son. A relative of the deceased, Baba Nati, said:  “Neighbours heard shouts in the house at about  6am  as the old woman was crying for help but before they could get there, the old woman was already lying in the pool of her blood.”

It was gathered that relatives and neighbours beat the suspect, who was into excessive drinking and smoking, to coma. DSP Abuh said the suspect was picked up by the police in a state of coma and taken to hospital, adding that  investigation  was ongoing.

A family member, Moses Yakubu, explained that the suspect, who is his elder brother, was restless the night before the incident and that no one could tell what prompted him to commit the dastardly act on their helpless mother.

According to him, the suspect is in the habit of drinking and smoking excessively and the situation led to his mental derangement

“Before now, he has been doing strange things, but this is the worst thing he has performed,” he lamented.
