Jose Mourinho has informed Wayne Rooney that he is free to leave Manchester United at the end of the season, according to reports.

The Sun claims that the United manager will not force the 31-year-old out of Old Trafford but he has informed the England captain’s representatives that he is no longer guaranteed a starting place in the team.

Rooney has been benched for United’s last four Premier League games, while Mourinho has insisted that the player will not be considered for any other positions than a No.10 or as a striker.

Interest from rival Premier League teams could be limited due to Rooney’s £250,000-a-week salary but United are open to negotiating a pay-off deal.

Rooney is four goals shy of overtaking Sir Bobby Charlton to become United’s all-time leading goal scorer.

The documentary, Wayne Rooney: The Man Behind the Goals, to be shown on BBC1 on Monday, reveals the tough footballer’s surprise sensitive side and is presented by Gary Lineker

Wayne Rooney, 29, has turned his Cheshire mansion into a giant playground for his family. The Manchester United captain allowed cameras a glimpse of his off-field life for a documentary to mark his achievement of becoming England's greatest goalscorer.

Inside his house there is a games room with pool table and arcade machines, an LA Galaxy shirt worn by Steven Gerrard and guitars signed by Sir Paul McCartney and Oasis star Noel Gallagher. Outside, the vast garden contains a cabin-like climbing frame, inflatables, a caravan-style den - and, of course, a set of real goalposts for kickabouts with sons Kai, five, and Klay, two.

Blue tune: Rooney is said to be a huge fan of rock stars' guitars, even though he cannot play a note. This ons is customised by Manchester City fan Noel Gallagher. He also has a guitar signed by Sir Paul McCartney

The footballer's lavish home even includes his very own trophy room, filled with his accolades over the years

Coleen says her husband can be a 'big kid' and sometimes allows the children to play football inside the house
