A school of thought believes that relationships have improved since the advent of social network websites. This may be right because the websites make it easy for persons from different parts of the world to be friends without seeing one another.
To the youth, the essence of social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, Mozat, 2go and so on, is to socialise and network. Alas, the idea has been turned upside down. In many countries today, social networks have been turned to obscene sites for pornography. On Nigerian campuses, the best way to see the nudity of decent and lewd students is through 2go.
For lascivious youths, 2go is a website to meet erotic partners. Girls find new guys and vice versa. The social network is easy to be downloaded on mobile phones and computers. It also has features that make instant messages possible to be sent across and also instant pictures to be shown to other users via mobile phones.
On campuses, addicted students use most of their periods to chat with friends and lovers. In the lecture rooms, while some of their colleagues are concentrating, students who are addicted to 2go are always busy chatting and viewing nude pictures of their mates.
Through the social network websites, some decent girls have lost their innocence by free display of their private body parts for boys to see. There are cases where female students deliberately get shots of their friends in the nude in hostels and post to guys through the social network website.
CAMPUSLIFE learnt of the case of Winifred (surname withheld), who is a Law student in a university in Ekiti State. Her beauty attracted guys to her like a magnet. Knowing that she subscribed to 2go, male students in her department wanted to be her friends. She turned down offers from the guys.
Winifred’s course mate gave his rich friend her username. She reportedly fell in love with the guy. In no time, Winifred travelled to meet the affluent male student in his institution and reportedly had intercourse with the guy several times. However, she never knew it was a set up. The next time she visited her wealthy 2go boyfriend, she met her course mate and the 2go boyfriend displaying her nude pictures and mocking her. This is the bad side of 2go, a social network website on which many students love to share their nudity.
At Adebola Adegunwa School of Communication, Lagos State University (LASU), 200-Level journalism students were surprised to hear their Print Media lecturer, Mr Akintunde Akanni, compelling them to subscribe to Twitter and Skype.
According to Akanni, the world is changing and no student would grab the idea of the new communication system without subscribing to social websites. He enjoined the students to embrace the advantages of the social media.
However, do students think in this direction? Hear Omoghene Agali, a 400-Level student at Delta State University (DELSU): “2go package na im sure pass o, my brother. To nail any girl that believes that she is Mr President’s daughter, all you need is just to get her 2go username and once that is done, the mission is accomplished.”
Through the social website, Austin Omoaka, a student of University of Benin (UNIBEN), said he was dating six girls on his campus. Emmanuel Michael, who criticised the media for exposing the misdemeanour of social networks, said: “Once these girls start reading all this, show no go dey for guys again. After my exam, I already have a 2go girl that is coming from another institution to visit me. Please, no spoil my show.”
Ifes Umunna, 100-Level Mathematics student of Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), thinks social network websites aid communication and unite people, despite its bad side.
