We signed Romero because De Gea might leave – Van Gaal

Louis van Gaal has admitted he signed Sergio Romero, because of the possibility of David De Gea leaving for Real Madrid this summer. Manchester United confirmed the arrival of the Argentine goalkeeper in the early hours of Monday and he has signed a three-year deal with the club.

Romero, who was a free agent, said the transfer was a “dream come true” and thanked Van Gaal for bringing him to Old Trafford. But the Dutchman has revealed why he made the signing. “I think that in our circumstances, with the threat that David de Gea is going to Real Madrid, we have to prepare our season and I think Sergio Romero can fulfil that because you have to handle very quickly when it may happen with David de Gea. He is a very good choice”, the United manager said.
