Oscars 2017: Emma Stone claims she had the Best Actress card the whole time so couldn’t have given it to Warren Beatty

Emma Stone has attempted to absolve Leonardo DiCaprio of any blame. After The Revenant actor was blamed by the internet for the cock up that led to Warren Beatty announcing the wrong winner of the Best Picture award, Emma Stone has stepped up to defend her fellow actors.

She confessed in the Winners’ room that she had the card, so couldn’t have given it to Leo, who in turn couldn’t have given it to Warren Beatty. However, as we now know there were too cards

‘I also was holding my Best Actress in a Leading Role card that entire time, so whatever story… I don’t mean to start stuff, but whatever story that was, I had that card.

She added: ‘So, I’m not sure that happened.’

So Leo possibly wasn’t to blame, but someone else was. Two of every winner’s card actually exist, held at either side of the stage by two accountants from Price Waterhouse Cooper, who have since taken responsibility for the mix up.

‘From a security perspective, we double up everything. That’s why there’s two of us. We have two briefcases, that are identical, and we have two entire sets of winning envelopes,’ accountant Brian Cullinan explained to Wall Street Journal’s Marketwatch.

PwC, or PricewaterhouseCoopers, the company behind the awards announcements, released a statement of apology over the blunder:

‘We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture.

‘The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.

‘We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.’

Neil Patrick Harris went on to prove it was not Warren Beatty’s fault either, with a tweet that showed he had the wrong envelope.

Emma Stone added of Moonlight’s win: ‘It was an amazing thing to hear La La Land. I think we all would have loved to win Best Picture. But we are SO excited for Moonlight.

‘I think it’s one of the best films of all time… But again, God I love Moonlight. I’m so excited. So I think it’s an incredible outcome, but a very strange happening for Oscar history.’

Either way, we can’t stop watching the moment Jordan Horowitz had to tell his fellow La La Land crew they had not actually won.

Jordan said: ‘There’s been a mistake, Moonlight, you won.’

The mistake is said to be being investigated by the academy.
