Lionel Messi Is World’s ‘Best’ Player, Beating Ronaldo And Van Dijk For 2019 FIFA FIFPro Men’s Award

The Best FIFA Men's Player Award Winner Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona and Argentina poses with the trophy

The 2019 FIFA FIFPro Men’s and Women’s Players of the Year were announced at a gala celebration held at the Teatro all Scala in Milan on Monday evening.

Lionel Messi beat off competition from Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk to take the Men’s award. The FIFA Awards became a stand-alone event in 2016 and Cristiano Ronaldo took home the first two trophies. Last year the winner was Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric.

Messi won the World’s Player of the Year award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015 when it was presented jointly as the FIFA/Ballon d’Or.

A separate award again, the Ballon d’Or winner will be announced in Paris on December 2 and it looks like a battle between Messi and UEFA Player of the Year, Virgil van Dijk.

Man Utd sack Jose Mourinho: Red Devils part way with manager

Manchester United have sacked Jose Mourinho as manager after two and a half years in charge. The Portuguese, 55, won the League Cup and the Europa League at Old Trafford.

But United are sixth in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, who beat them 3-1 on Sunday.

"A caretaker-manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager," United said in a statement.

"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future."

United's haul of 26 points after their first 17 Premier League games, is their worst tally in the top flight at this stage since 1990-91.

They are 11 points off the top four and closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table.

Mourinho's sacking comes after a fall-out with £89m record signing Paul Pogba, who was an unused substitute for the defeat at Anfield on Sunday.

And it continues his run of never completing four consecutive seasons in charge of a club.

Only once has he made it into a fourth campaign, but he left Chelsea on 17 December 2015 during his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

Senate asks CBN stop ATM card charges by banks

Senate asks CBN stop ATM card charges by banks

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday passed a resolution calling on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend the excessive ATM card maintenance charges being deducted from customers.

The resolution came as part of a motion sponsored by Senator Olugbenga Ashafa (Lagos East, APC) on the illicit and excessive bank charges on customers accounts,

The Senate also called on commercial banks operating in the country to configure their machines to dispense up to N40,000 per withdrawal pending the outcome of the investigation by the Senate committees tasked with investigating the excessive charges.

President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki said: “This is a motion that affects the lives of every Nigerian — irrespective of what part of the country you come from or whatever political affiliation you might have. This is why we are here: to always defend and protect the interests of the Nigerian people.”

The Senate President stated that the Senate must work to ensure that its resolution on the excessive bank charges goes beyond the debate stage, so that whatever action the Upper Legislative Chamber takes, would come into effect.

“This Senate has done this many times before; when there was a hike in the mobile telecommunication data charges, we intervened and put an end to that. When there were discrepancies and increases in electricity prices, we also took action. We have done this on a number of similar cases. Therefore, on this, I want us to take effective resolutions,” Saraki said.

Other Senators who contributed to the debate, called on banks to review their charges.

“The common man is also a victim,” said Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, “Banks declare profits and you wonder where these profits are coming from — it’s from the sweat of the common man. Let us come up with a law that puts banks on their toes.”

“It won’t be out of place to institute a committee that will call on the CBN to tell us what these charges are about. The Senate by fiat should abolish charges if they can’t be verified,” said Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah.

“The Senate must take a serious stand on this issue. Nigerians are really suffering. The banking system is not encouraging. I had an issue, took it to the bank and was refunded but how many Nigerians can do this? The issue needs to be addressed,” stated Senator Kabiru Gaya.

“For me, this is a major step that we are taking. This is because I introduced the first ATM machine that came into Nigeria over 25-years ago,” the Senate President, Dr. Saraki told his colleagues.

“Now, after 25-years, we should have grown out of these excessive charges and moved on. So, I believe that this is something that we must address to create an environment that protects all Nigerians, because these kind of charges in this economy affects everyone.”

The Senate further directed its Committees on Banking, Insurance & other Financial Institutions and Finance to conduct an investigation into the propriety of ATM card maintenance charges in comparison with international best practices and report back to the Senate.

The Senate also directed the committees to invite the Governor of the CBN to appear before it to explain why the official charges as approved by the CBN are skewed in favour of the banking institutions as against the ordinary customers of the banks.

The Senate called on the Consumer Protection Council to look into the various complaints of excessive and unnecessary charges by Nigerian banks.

The Federal High Court in Ibadan, on Thursday, granted the application of the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, to serve originating summons on the National Youth Service Corps in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that Shittu had in the last few weeks been confronted with criticisms for not observing the mandatory one-year national youth service.

Justice P.I. Ajoku ruled that the service of the originating summons be served on the respondents through the bailiffs of the court.

“The service of the plaintiff’s processes on the first, third and fourth defendants who are in Abuja shall be effected by the bailiffs of this honourable court,” the judge ruled.

The judge, however, adjourned the case till November 19 for report of service.

The suit has the Director-General, NYSC; the State Coordinator, NYSC; the NYSC and the Attorney-General of the Federation as the first, second, third and fourth defendants respectively.

Earlier, Mr Muktar Aderogba, counsel to the plaintiff, prayed the court to issue and serve the originating summons and the accompanying processes in the suit on the address of NYSC office in Abuja.

Aderogba added that he relied on the 12-paragraph affidavit and the written address supplied in support of his application.

The minister is seeking the order of the court to direct the first three defendants to issue him with a certificate of national service.

This, according to his originating summons, is based on having served the nation as a member of the House of Assembly of Oyo State between 1979 and 1983.

Alternatively, he is praying the court to grant an order to direct the first three defendants to issue him with a certificate of exemption from the NYSC.

This, he said, was again based on having served in an alternative capacity as a member of the Oyo state house of assembly.

The Ogun State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs. Josephine Bakare, has disclosed that a corps member died of kidney-related complications a day before the passing out parade.

Bakare disclosed this at the passing out parade of the about 3,799 corps members for the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 in Ogun. The corps members had completed their service year on Thursday.

She charged them to keep themselves busy and utilise lessons learnt.

The corps members comprised 2,026 females and 1,773 males.

The coordinator advised the youths to use the opportunity to engage themselves in self-development endeavours, rather than wait on non-existent jobs.

She inspired them to be the best they could be, adding that it is only by investing in themselves that they could achieve greater heights.

“One opportunity opened to you is entrepreneurship, which has become the centre-piece of self-empowerment as preached by the NYSC scheme.

“It is my earnest hope that a large percentage of you will become job creators rather than job seekers.

“Don’t waste time to wait for jobs that are not forthcoming.

“It is this attitude that will take you to the pinnacle of whatever pursuit you embark upon, marking you for great exploits,’’ Bakare advised.

She urged the corps members not to involve themselves in illegal activities that could tarnish their image.

The corps members were also urged to imbibe the spirit of humility, service and dedication as they enter into the larger society.

The coordinator said that about 25 corps members ran afoul of the NYSC bye-laws and did not complete the programme.

She added that pending directives from the national body of the scheme, those affected will either get elongated service or be asked to repeat the programme as deemed fit.
