Sunderland chief executive resigns over Adam Johnson

BREAKING: Sunderland chief executive resigns over Adam Johnson

Margaret Byrne has announced her resignation as Sunderland chief executive over her role in the Adam Johnson criminal case. Adam Johnson, 28, was last week found guilty at Bradford Crown Court of sexual activity with a child and is facing a custodial sentence later this month.

Johnson also admitted kissing and grooming the 15-year-old victim. He was cleared of one further count. Today, Margaret Byrne announced her resignation as Sunderland chief executive. Byrne was aware of transcripts of police interviews in which Johnson admitted to kissing his victim, it was revealed in court last week.

Police also said that Byrne had in her possession copies of over 800 text messages between the pair.
The club always maintained that they believed Johnson would plead not guilty on all four counts. However, questions were raised over just how much Byrne knew about the case.
