Two die, three pensioners slump at Bayelsa verification

Two die, three pensioners slump at Bayelsa verification

Two old pensioners died and three others slumped during a verification ordered by the Bayelsa State Government. It was learnt that the incident occurred on Monday and Tuesday at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex at Ovom area of Yenagoa, the state capital.

Of the three pensioners that collapsed, two were said to have survived while one is said to be in a coma at a private hospital in the state capital. The downpour reportedly contributed to the hardship of the pensioners during the exercise.

The exercise which started on Monday was initiated by the state government to get the actual figure of the pensioners. But the retirees complained that the exercise had many hiccups and urged the government to find a lasting solution to their plight.

Sources said the unnamed two dead pensioners were initially taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, but because of the ongoing strike there, their remains were taken to an undisclosed morgue at a private hospital in the state.

The Chairman, Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Bayelsa Action Group chapter, Chief Bodi Amaran, confirmed the incident on Tuesday. Amaran said four pensioners slumped on Monday, out of which, two died while the other two survived, adding that on Tuesday, another pensioner collapsed and relapsed into a coma.

He lamented the plight of pensioners in the state, saying that they (pensioners) were being treated as refugees. Amaran, who said the pensioners were owed nine months, noted that many of them were hungry while others had been on drugs but were unable to buy their medications for lack of money.

Shedding light on the incident, he said, “Four pensioners collapsed on Monday. Of the number, two died and the other two were revived. On Tuesday, one elderly pensioner slumped. He is in a coma as I speak.

“The Monday incident happened in the afternoon while that of Tuesday happened when the rain was falling. The number of pensioners was many. For nine months, we have not been paid.

“The conditions of most pensioners are pitiable. We are being treated as refugees. The last month we got paid was in September 2015.”

When asked to give the names of the deceased pensioners, Amaran said they had yet to confirm their names and their local governments, promising to furnish our correspondent with the names later.

Another pensioner, Mr. Daniel Ogobugha, said he was not happy with the method adopted for the verification, adding that the government should have combined the payment of the arrears with the exercise.

He said, “Yes, we have been here since morning, many of our people have fainted, some critical ones have been rushed to the hospital; the government is helping, but this exercise is very stressful to us.

“Most of us are aged, some can no longer walk but look at us here for verification; well, if it is the way to fish out fake pensioners, it is okay but I must tell you that this is not good due to the health of some of us.

“Some of us are being owed for over six months, we can’t pay our children school fees, with the current harsh economy, feeding has been a huge challenge to some families.”

Another retiree, Mr Richard Epiri, urged the state government to expedite action in paying the backlog of their pensions. The Chairperson, Bayelsa Pensions Board, Mrs. Jane Aleke, said the the pensioners collapsed because of exhaustion but did not indicate if any death occurred.

She confirmed that the affected persons were rushed to the Government House Clinic. Aleke said that the exercise was not aimed at stressing the retirees but to enable the government get the actual figure of pensioners.

She appealed to the retirees to be calm and promised that every pensioner in the state would be captured in the exercise.

“This is about management of wealth and you know in paying them, the state government cannot just begin to pay with a guess number, so, we cannot do guess work.

“We are ready to reach all the local governments in the state, we have started with Yenagoa; for those of them, who are sick and cannot walk, we will definitely go to their houses.”

Stubborn pensioner, 86, condemns fellow villagers to 'painfully slow' broadband

Stubborn pensioner, 86, condemns fellow villagers to 'painfully slow' broadband

Raymond Moreton, 86, has physically blocked BT workers from upgrading a telephone box, pictured with Mr Moreton, on his property in Yelverton, Norfolk, claiming it would devalue his house by £50,000.

The pensioner claims his garden would be constantly 'trampled' by engineers, top right, and their visits would cause traffic to build up outside his home. But the dispute has left neighbours annoyed and confused, claiming they are putting up with 'extremely slow' internet and that they 'don't understand what his beef is' with the upgrade.

The former aircraft mechanic has even called the police in after workers turned up at his home, bottom right. BT say it will be unable to provide high-speed broadband to the whole village unless it can upgrade the box, and the firm has gone to Norfolk Council over the issue, with the highways department suggesting changing the property's boundaries, inset, to bring the box outside Mr Moreton's land, something he is resisting.

75-year-old pensioner slumps, dies during screening in Edo

75-year-old pensioner slumps, dies during screening in Edo

There was outrage on Tuesday by pensioners of the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State after a local government pensioner, identified as Sunday Oboite, slumped and died during screening. It was learnt that Oboite, 75, died at the reception of the local government secretariat.

It was gathered that the late pensioner, who retired from the Works department of the council, was at the secretariat for screening which the council had directed the pensioners to undertake before they would be paid their 10-month pension arrears.

He was said to have been offered a bottle of beverage and some water by a Good Samaritan after he complained of hunger. He, however, slumped at about 1.20pm, before he was confirmed dead by some doctors at the council. According to a source, his death sparked a protest among other pensioners, who were enraged by what had befallen their colleague.

The source said, “Some of them complained that they had presented themselves for screening at the secretariat at about 8am, but were later informed to go to Urhokpota Hall, about 100 metres away. They also decried the delay in the exercise, which took hours before it commenced.”

The Chairman of the council, Mrs. Sweet Ikpomwosa, could not be reached for comments. The Secretary of Oredo Pensioners Association, Mr. James Erhunmense, said that the late Oboite had arrived at the venue of the exercise alone and complained of not having any money to buy food and drugs.

He also said that the late pensioner was unable to go to the designated hall with his colleagues but chose to wait at the reception due to tiredness. Another pensioner, James Omorogbe, said the computers used for the screening were always shutting down, adding that it took the death of their colleague for the council to provide them with chairs.

He said the death of Oboite could have been avoided if the council officials had prepared for the screening.

“Sunday said he had no money to buy food and drugs. For 10 months now, we have not been paid. Many others have died without collecting their benefits,” Omorogbe added.

Osun pensioners claimed that Aregbesola is diverting bailout funds

Osun pensioners claimed that Aregbesola is diverting bailout funds

Reports by Punch says that The Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Osun State has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to lay an embargo on the N34.988bn bailout fund released to the state for payment of workers salaries and pensions. The Chairman of the NUP in the state, Tunde Ogunniyi, who said this at a press conference in Osogbo on Tuesday, said this call became necessary because Governor Rauf Aregbesola had allegedly refused to use the fund for what it was meant.

Ogunniyi also called on President Muhammdu Buhari and the National Assembly to declare emergency rule in the state because the state was gravitating towards anarchy because of nonpayment of salaries and pensions.

The pensioners said while many states which took the bailout had started paying backlog of salaries to their workers, Aregbesola had refused to pay workers and pensioners their entitlements. The NUP chairman said pensioners in the state were being owed backlog of unpaid pensions ranging from 10 to 15 months. He stated that some of the pensioners were paid half of December 2014 pension and none had been paid a dime in 2015.

He said, ” Pensioners have complied with the conditions laid down by the government for them to access their entitlements, which is screening of all pensioners in the state.

“We expect the state government to have commenced payment after the screening about three weeks ago but the government has refused to do so.

” This action of Osun State Government led by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola amount to deliberate display of callousness, greediness, wickedness, flagrant disobedience to the rule of law, maladministration and fraud.

” We hereby resolved that the Central Bank of Nigeria should immediately take over the direct payment of the money to each pensioner or in the alternative, place embargo on the state government from accessing the loan which the governor is planning to divert to fund white elephant projects.”

Ogunniyi said Eco Bank took similar action when it lent Osun State some money to offset pension arrears in 2014. He explained that the step was taken by the bank to ensure that the loan was not diverted for other use.

The pensioner stated that many members if the NUP had died prematurely because of lack of money to feed and to buy drugs to treat diseases some of them were managing.

The union however called on the anti-graft agencies to investigate Aregbesola on how he had been managing the finances of the state, saying “he should be punished in accordance with the anti-graft law of the land.

“We also want to warn these Lagos contractors to immediately pack all their equipment and leave Osun state within one week because their safety can no longer be guaranteed by the hungry Pensioners, workers and citizen of Osun state.”

There has been allegation from the Peoples Democratic Party in the state that the governor paid a contractor N20bn from the bailout fund, but the governor had since denied it. Aregbesola had on Monday in a statement assured workers and pensioners that the bailout fund would be used for the purpose which it was meant.
