THE Acting Vice-Chancellor (VC), University of Lagos, Prof Rahman Ade Bello has urged the government, the Institute of Security, Nigeria and other stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the threat posed by insecurity in the country.

In his goodwill message, a former UNILAG VC Prof Oye Ibidapo-Obe said: "Indeed, security in Nigeria requires a total overhaul in order to attain effectiveness and efficiency. Making progress within the security system needs great co-ordinated attention for the exercise not to be in futility."
Ibidapo-Obe, who is the President, the Nigerian Academy of Science, urged security agencies to partner with the institute to get a comprehensive blue print on the security system in the country.
He suggested that the government should fund very well the building of a modern and, indeed, functional security equipment and facilities, adding that this would guarantee the realisation of an efficient security network.
He said the Academy of Science believes that a functional security system must adopt a scientific approach to crime prevention and eradication.
''The scientific measures can be referred to increasingly sophisticated computerised mapping tools that enable security practitioners to track and analyse crime directly affecting the community,” he added.
On the choice of Revitalising security services and law enforcement for enhanced productivity and effectiveness, as theme of the conference, the institute's President, Prof Isaac Adalemo, said: "Insecurity and threat to the maintenance of law and order has assumed a frightening and alarming dimension in Nigeria. The threat sceptre of terrorism looms large and threatens the very existence of the nation. The activities of the Boko Haram and similar militant groups easily underscore the rising stakes in respect of their destructive campaigns.”
What is the way out? He provides an answer: "Our security system must be thoroughly refurbished and strengthened ... It is about making realistic changes, which will enable us put our house in order and earn the respect of other nations."  -THE NATION
