A 25-year-old applicant, Gbenga Alexander, on Tuesday appeared in a Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, for allegedly stealing phone in a bank. The police prosecutor, Corporal Friday Adaji, told the magistrate that while the defendant was inside the bank, he stole one of the customer’s phones but forgot to switch it off.
Alexander, who resides at Mararaba, is facing a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft. The Prosecutor told the court further that Kajoh Sylvanus, a security guard attached to Diamond Bank Mararaba branch, reported the matter at the ‘A’ Divisional Headquarters, Mararaba, on May 12.
Adaji said the defendant entered into the banking hall and claimed he wanted to see a friend who came to deposit money. He said that while the defendant was inside the bank, he stole one of the customer’s phones but forgot to switch it off.
“The phone rang when the owner searched for it and it was then found in the possession of the defendant.
He said that the customer raised an alarm which alerted the security guard, adding that the defendant was arrested and handed over to the police. The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.
The defendant pleaded not guilty.
The presiding officer, Mr Albert Maga, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N100, 000, with one surety in like sum. He adjourned the case till May 26 for further hearing.
