18 years old gunman shoots dead 82-year-old woman and a male cyclist

The gunman was caught at a petrol station by staff in Ansbach following a hunt that included helicopters

An 82-year-old woman and a male cyclist have been shot dead by a lone gunman in Germany. He fired at them from a silver Mercedes in Leutershausen-Tiefenthal near the city of Ansbach in southern Bavarian state. After an extensive police hunt, he was eventually bundled to the ground and tied up by workers at a petrol station after he threatened them with a gun.

The gunman - believed to be 18 - was then arrested by police. The driver first shot and killed the woman, 82, after exchanging words with her before pulling the trigger. Shortly afterwards, he gunned down the cyclist in the nearby town of Rammersdorf.

A farmer and another motorist were also shot at, but police said both were unharmed. Police spokeswoman Simone Wiesenberg told n-tv television the gunman had been arrested but provided no other details. The gunman was arrested at a petrol station in Bad Windsheim, about 35 kilometers (20 miles) from the scene of the shootings.

German police have said the shootings were not connected to terrorism. The mayor of Leutershausen, Siegfried Hess, said he was sickened by the attack. 'In a place with 5,500 inhabitants, where we have always lived quietly, you only know about such situations from the television. And then something like this happens on your doorstep.'
