Beijing to host 2022 Winter Olympics beating off competition from Kazakhstan

IOC president Thomas Bach announces that Beijing will host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games

Beijing has been awarded the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics and will become the first city to host both the summer and winter editions of the Games - despite a reliance on fake snow. The Chinese city beat the only other candidate Almaty, Kazakhstan 44-40 in a ballot among IOC members in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Friday.

The vote was delayed by technical problems involving the new electronic voting system, so members voted again by paper ballot.Beijing hosted the summer Olympic Games just seven years ago in 2008, but the IOC deemed it a more suitable host than the Kazakh city of Almaty in central Asia despite its reliance on artificial snow.

It will be the third Games in a row to be held in that region after the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The 2022 bidding process had seen a number of withdrawals with Oslo, Kiev, Lviv and Krakow all pulling out of the running to host the Games.
