Buhari will not take Nigerians for granted – Onu

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has assured Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari will not take them for granted. Onu said the President cherishes the mandate freely given to him by Nigerians and as such, his administration would be guided by respect for the rule of law in the conduct of government business.

The former Anambra State governor said this at the Investiture Ceremony held in honour of former Minister of Education, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, in Enugu. This was contained in a statement by his ex-Chief of Staff, Mr. Sunny Onyeukwu, in Abuja, on Wednesday. He quoted Onu as saying the era of government and its personnel treating citizens with disrespect and engaging in acts of impunity was gone.

Nwabueze was conferred with the “Distinguished Academic Leadership Award” by the Convention for Intellectual Cooperation in Nigeria. Onu described the emergence of President Buhari as a blessing; he said the current administration will not take Nigerians and the nation’s constitution for granted.

According to him, the emphasis on the rule of law would foster good governance and ensure that “no Nigerian will be above the law and every Nigerian will be below the law.” This, he said, will help enthrone justice in the polity which he noted is a necessary ingredient for peace, progress and prosperity to thrive in the new Nigeria which the APC-led administration promised Nigerians.

Onu advocated for the stimulation of vibrant patriotic commitment of the citizenry towards nation-building. He also gave assurances that conscious efforts rooted in respect for the rule of law would be pursued to secure the confidence of Nigerians in governance. The party chieftain expressed confidence that Nigeria would sooner than later take her rightful place in the comity of democratic nations of the world.

Onu further argued that placing emphasis on those worthy attributes that will strengthen the self-worth of the individual and enhance the respect and dignity of Nigeria as Africa’s most populous nation were all that the country needed to jump start its growth.
