
It turns out that there’s quite a bit of weirdness involved in achieving scientific innovation, and the Ig Nobel prize is only too willing to applaud that. Described as a celebration of science that ‘makes you laugh, then think’, the awards were held at Harvard University and are known for honouring some of science’s more unconventional discoveries.
Take researcher Michael Smith, who pressed bees up against his body until they stung him five times a day in a total of 25 different locations, for 38 days. The reason for this? Just because he wanted to work out the most painful place to be stung (the nostril, the upper lip and the shaft of the penis if you were wondering).
Unsurprisingly, he won first place for this achievement.
