
The comedian passed away after a short battle with cancer, her publicist confirmed. Her publicist, Neil Reading, said: ‘Victoria Wood has sadly passed away, after a short but brave battle with cancer.
‘The multi BAFTA award-winning writer, director, actor and comedian died peacefully at her north London home with family this morning. She was 62.
‘The family ask for privacy at this very sad time.’
Victoria was fiercely private about her personal life so news of her death has come as a sad shock to many. Long-time friend and comedian Jennifer Saunders tweeted: ‘Cant believe Vic has gone.She was truly an inspiration and had so much left to to give and we won’t see it. She was so funny.‘
Derren Brown also shared his shock: ‘No! Not Victoria Wood. What on earth is going on? A shy genius by all accounts. End of an era.’
Comedian Katy Brand told Sky News called her ‘the queen of the craft of writing’. Victoria got her first showbiz break on New Faces in 1974.
A four time BAFTA winner, getting her first in 1986 for Victoria Wood As Seen on TV, Wood for many, will be remembered most dearly for her BBC sitcom Dinner Ladies opposite Julie Walters. May her soul rest in peace
