A 45-year-old caterer, Mrs Victoria Udeagha, on Friday urged an Agege Customary Court, in Lagos to dissolve her 20-year-old marriage to Emeka Udeagha over alleged battery and threat to life.
Victoria, who lives at No. 28 Gbadamosi St. Ojodu Berger, Lagos, told the court that she had been separated from the husband since August, 2015.
"Because of the constant beating since we got married 2012, I developed high blood pressure.
"As if that was not enough, he kept maltreating me in the presence of our three children.
"My husband frustrated my efforts when I was trying to study at the University of Port Harcourt by refusing to pay my school fees,’’ she said.
Victoria urged the court to dissolve the marriage and ask her husband to be responsible for the upkeep of their children. The respondent, Emeka, 52, a businessman, denied the accusations.
He told the court that he still wanted the marriage and had tried for a reconciliation through his church and in-laws which proved futile.
``If she wants a dissolution she has to refund the N25, 000 I paid as dowry during our traditional rites,’’ he said.
The Court President, Mr Philip Williams, adjourned the case to May 30 for judgment.
