Court dissolves 6-year-old marriage over long separation, incompatibility

An Agege Customary Court in Lagos, on Friday dissolved the six-year-old marriage between Mr Godwin Makata and his wife, Blessing, over long separation, incompatibility and lack of love.

The court’s President, Mr Philip Williams, dissolved the marriage on the grounds that the respondent, Blessing, did not turn-up during the entire proceedings.

``Since the respondent has refused to appear in court after several summons, it shows that she is no longer interested in the marriage.

"All efforts to hear from the respondent proved abortive; it shows that the marriage has broken down irreparable,’’ he said.

Williams ordered both parties to go their separate ways and warned them to desist from blackmailing and harassing each other. He ordered that the marriage dissolution certificate should be sent to the respondent.

Godwin, 40, who lives at 14b, Taiwo Street, Jankara, Ijaiye in Lagos had told the court that he was frustrated in the marriage, which had not been blessed with a child.

He pleaded for the dissolution of the marriage on the grounds of lack of love and care, and that his wife had no respect for him and his family members.

``My wife is too troublesome and stubborn; this is why the marriage only lasted for a year and since then we have lived our separate lives for the past five years,’’ he said.

He said that the dissolution would enable him to move on with his life.
