French investigators confirm EgyptAir black box has been found

French investigators have been confirmed that the EgyptAir black box has been found. The search for the wreckage of Flight MS804 has been taking place ever since it crashed in to the sea last month killing all 66 people on board. The update was confirmed by Egypt’s Civil Aviation Ministry, citing a statement from the committee investigating the crash.

Officials also confirmed that a second ship, John Lethbridge, affiliated with the Deep Ocean Search firm, will join the search team later this week. Teams narrowed their search radius to just three miles last week after detecting signals from the aircraft’s fuselage.

But until now there had been no trace of the black boxes, which could provide a valuable insight in to the last moments of the doomed flight. The international search has so far involved ships and planes from Britain, Cyprus, France, Greece and the United States.

A French vessel that is part of the convoy is equipped with sonar that can pick up the underwater ‘pings’ emitted by black box recorders.

The water in the search area reaches between 8,000 and 10,000 feet in depth.
