Man found guilty of cutting off dog's ears with scissors

A man has been found guilty of cutting off his dog’s ears with a pair of scissors. Christopher Griffiths, 34, was caught in the middle of the act by a neighbour, who had heard the dog’s screams of pain.

Following the attack on September 22 last year, vets discovered that the dog, called Victor, had cocaine in his system. Prosecutor Glen Murphy told Wrexham Magistrates Court that Griffiths had caused ‘unnecessary pain’ to his Staffordshire bull terrier.

The court heard how Griffiths’ neighbour, Mark Jones, witnessed the 34-year-old kneeling over Victor from his window. Mr Jones said the dog was obviously in distress and had yelped like he had been stabbed.

Bethan Jones, defending, told the court Griffiths claims he had been attacked and knocked unconscious by another man over a drugs-related matter. The alleged attacker had then cut off Victor’s ears and threatened to do the same to Griffiths.

Ms Jones said Griffiths had suffered a serious brain injury 14 months ago which had also affected his mobility and strength and his left arm was paralysed. She said he physically would not have been capable of carrying out the attack.

But the court heard how his testimony did not add up and found him guilty of both counts yesterday.
Griffiths was released on unconditional bail and is due to be sentenced on June 17.
