
David Cameron has given his final speech as Prime Minister before heading to Buckingham Palace to formally resign.
Mr Cameron said it had been the ‘greatest honour of my life to serve our country as prime minister’ with wife Samantha and their three children by his side. He started by saying that the country was ‘much stronger’ and that he believed Theresa May would provide a ‘strong and stable’ leadership.
Cameron was accompanied by wife Samantha and children Nancy, 12, Elwyn, 10, and Florence, 5 as he left 10 Downing Street for the final time.
Both staff and tourists gathered to watch Cameron’s final farewell, with crowds cheering as he made his way to the palace to tender his formal resignation.
In his speech, he said: ‘I do believe today, that our country is much stronger.’
Cameron also said he believed Theresa May would provide ‘strong and stable’ leadership and wished her well in negotiations over Brexit.
He said serving as prime minister had been the ‘greatest honour of my life’.
Adding: ‘As we leave for the last time, my only wish is continued success for this great country, that I love so very much.’
