Police have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of terrorism after a bag ‘full of wires’ was discovered in North Greenwich Tube station in London. Disturbingly, the device had passed through both Westminster and Canary Wharf stations before it was found at North Greenwich.
Staff said a passenger had handed the bag to the Tube driver, who took it into his cab thinking it was lost property. However he became suspicious, and after inspecting it found there were wires inside, according to the Guardian.
According to some reports, there was also a clock and some sort of electrical equipment.
A Tube source said: ‘There’s a lot of lost property every week and it’s quite rare for something to be regarded as this suspicious, and obviously for the police to close down the line for this length of time.’
It was blown up in a controlled explosion after the station was evacuated on Thursday morning. Officers seized the suspect in the middle of the street on Friday in an armed operation in Holloway Road, north London.
The Met Police said a Taser was discharged during the arrest, but no shots were fired.
