A man has admitted killing Paige Doherty, the 15-year-old schoolgirl whose body was found in bushes by a roadside in March. Deli owner John Leathem, 32, pleaded guilt to murder today at the High Court in Glasgow. He stabbed the teenager 43 times in the head and neck after she walked into his sandwich shop to buy a breakfast roll.
Paige disappeared from Clydebank, in West Dunbartonshire near Glasgow, on the morning of Saturday March 19 and her body was discovered two days later. The part-time hairdresser went missing on her way to collect her wages from the salon where she worked in Clydebank.
After her body was found, famous faces rallied to honour her memory by replicating her favourite pose in photos posted across social media hashtagged #PoutForPaige. Specialist forensic officers narrowed down their search to the Delicious Deli in Clydebank’s Fleming Avenue, the premises where the teenager was last spotted after leaving a friend’s house.
Paige’s body was found in a wooded area behind a path off Great Western Road, a busy route connecting Clydebank and Glasgow.
Shop owner Leathem was arrested three days later over the death – a killing which stunned the community and wider public.
In a statement released at the time, Paige’s mother Pamela Munro said: ‘We are absolutely devastated that we have lost our beautiful little girl.’
